The idea behind the TerryReport is news analysis, careful reasoning with historical perspective and clear thinking about where we might be headed.
We live in a time when commentary on public issues has been turned into often vile accusation, abandoning any degree of calm reason . Now, everyone has a chance to speak up, but most people seem to want to play the role of freelance propagandists. Ordinary citizens continually want to echo what they hear on talk radio, as if shouting down someone else’s views would be a benefit to anyone. On the web, he who fills his pages with rage, gets the most attention. Is there any room for careful, measured thought not piled high with ideological baggage? We’ll see.
In 2011, all of the rhetoric has been stepped up 40 notches. People are being told their government, the leadership of which they elected, is now the embodiment of evil. This kind of invective leads little room for accommodation, forget compromise. It is reminiscent of times in world history when shouting in the streets turned into actual conflict. The danger of this exaggerated talk is that it leaves nowhere for the citizen to turn.
Our public dialog, or lack of it, is just one of the many topics here. Terrorism, cycling, travel, cell phones, photography, American social conditions, politics and government, higher education, wealth and poverty, literature and other stuff can all be found in these pages. Also, technology, occasionally.
